Barley
Scotch whisky is perhaps Scotland's best known and economically-important product. JHI plays its part in ensuring the long-term future and profitability of this sector by undertaking fundamental research into barley, which once it has been malted, is one of the key components of whisky.
Scientists at JHI are world leaders in the genetics of barley and are using this knowledge to develop molecular markers, which will revolutionise the process of barley breeding over the coming years. Past JHI varieties, such as Tyne and Livet, look set to be supplemented by new varieties currently undergoing National List trials.
